OUR GRANDPARENTS- When Zaidy Was Young- Composed By Shmuel Kunda- Tale 2

Our grandparents came to this land,
A land they did not understand.
They made their new start
With hope in their heart,
And all that they owned in their hand.

Our grandparents came ‘cross the sea,
Hoping that now they’d be free.
With prayers on their lips,
They came in great ships,
Fulfilling their destiny.

CHORUS:
Our grandparents came to this place,
Not sure of the life they would face.
So few and alone,
They found a new home
Which they would now have to embrace.
Our grandparents struggled and fought
To keep the traditions they brought.
Determined to cling
To every last thing
That they had been carefully taught.

Papa, Papa, how much longer ‘til we get to America?
This boat is so crowded and the trip has been so long…
I know, my son. But very soon, we will be there
To begin our new life. I’m sure it won’t take too much longer.
Papa, Papa, look over there!
I see it. I see land. I see lights. It’s the harbor of New York!
I can see the buildings!
Ahhhh…. And look over there- it is the famous Statue of Liberty!
Oh, look, Papa. It’s so big, I can’t believe it!
Ah, my son, yes. America is a big country.
Will we feel at home there, Papa? Will we like it?
This is something we will find out soon, my son. IY”H, very soon.

Our grandparents came to this land,
A land they did not understand.
With clothing and pots,
All bundled in knots,
And all that they owned in their hand.

Our grandparents came ‘cross the sea,
Each with his own family,
With wonder and fear,
As they passed so near The Statue of Liberty.

CHORUS:
Our grandparents came to this place,
Not sure of the life they would face.
So few and alone,
They found a new home
Which they would now have to embrace.
Our grandparents struggled and fought
To keep the traditions they brought.
Determined to cling
To every last thing
That they had been carefully taught.

Our grandparents came to this land…
To this land.
